Notes About The Poem
This free verse was inspired by my teenage granddaughter. It is a lyrical exploration of a teenage girl’s transition into adulthood through the lens of interior design and her intellectual ambition.
The Architect of Atmosphere
Her mind is a high-speed particle collider,
smashing dreams against the gravity of the everyday.
She carries a library of "not yet" in her marrow,
a brilliant cartography of a life she hasn’t lived,
drawn in the margins of AP* Calculus notes.
To her, a room is never just four walls and a floor;
it is a living canvas, a balanced equation,
a geometric proof of how a soul might finally breathe.
She wears oversized vintage blazers like suit of armor,
padded shoulders to hold the weight of her own expectations.
The combat boots are for the heavy lifting of the spirit,
grounding her when her thoughts drift into the stratosphere.
She dresses in layers—not for the cold, but for the chrysalis;
a secret held in denim and thrifted silk,
waiting for the climate to match her internal fire.
It is an "unlimited" aesthetic, a mixture of the eras—
the sleek metal of the future married to the satin of the past.
There was the first real boyfriend: a tether and a gale.
The first kiss felt like the soft-click of a key in a lock,
a sudden bloom of color in a monochromatic hallway.
But she found that some hearts are just rest stops,
and she is a cross-country engine built for the long haul.
She takes that memory of intimacy and turns it into design—
crafting nooks for secrets and wide-open floors for freedom,
knowing now that a space is only as good as the exit it provides.
The honors cords are just gold-threaded leashes;
she appreciates the praise but craves the open sea.
The bad times are heavy, like wet wool or a drafty hall,
but she uses the friction to polish her resolve.
She views a door not as wood and hinge,
but as a portal of permission she no longer waits for.
Her school is a map of rooms that have grown too small,
the ceiling a glass barrier she’s been buffing to a shine
until it reflects the brilliant, self-made light of her own eyes.
Her college ambition is a blueprint of a cathedral
she is building with her own bare, steady hands.
She dreams of vaulted ceilings and industrial glass,
of sustainable silk and textures that tell a story of grit.
The motivation isn’t a spark; it’s a steady-state reactor,
fueled by the "more" that the world tries to ration.
She is walking through the threshold of the now,
her mind a silver-quick engine, an architect of the void,
already half-way into a future that is finally large
enough to hold the mixture of who she is.
