The Amnesiac Parent
heard from the parent who insists
that the person you just broke up with
was the best one you ever had?
heard from the parent who tells you that
you’ve got to settle down, that you won’t always be
young?
heard from the parent that wants grandchildren &
won’t stop nagging you to go out there & get knocked up,
so that s/he can have little rugrats combing the surface of
their out of date shag carpeting?
these amnesiac parents forget how it was
when they broke up with someone,
they forget that what is needed is support &
not the constant badgering about a life that they need
before they die,
which includes the complete submission of your own.
and if you are a parent
who sits in the study &
mulls over a 20 something who bears your name,
who “just won’t get their act together,”
or who just gave up the best person in their life,
one wonders,
is it
you
that wanted to **** the ex-boyfriend/girlfriend all along?
if they were so good, why didn’t you offer them sexual favors
before slicing the holiday bird of choice?
and by all means,
if you wanted more little rats scurrying round the house,
**** & **** & ****
your own significant other &
get a new one yourself,
so that
YOU
can take care of them &
YOU
can spend
money,
time &
energy,
which your kids just don’t want to waste.
