That First Year
The entire prospect grew excitement and anticipation.
It was not merely about the vegetables. Nay. There was
plenty of food of all varieties within walking distance.
It was about a new endeavor, an adventure of sorts.
The soil was prepared.
The seedlings were purchased.
The nutrients were provided.
The future tomatoes were planted.
Like the rising sun, they were faithful
and came right up, beginning their
development and apparent thriving.
Yes, they grew and grew and grew.
That is, the plant grew, but there
was barely a sign of fruit-bearing.
They grew tall, high above the fence line,
waving hello to our neighbors; But no fruit.
There was a great demand for tomatoes, but
never a market for fruitless tomato plants.
But in that first year, that's all there was.
