Thanksgiving Dinner Parties

As the Holidays approach, I start to lose my appetite,

Worried about arguments, that draw near to a fright.

Can we get a gag order? No talk of this nor that,

Independents and Republicans, Socialist and Democrats,

Gathered at our table, so grateful for this meal?

Lest this precious, happy gathering, will turn to an ordeal.

Memories are forming of my youth so long ago,

That yanks and pulls my heart back, where I wish not to go.

Papa stood then bellowed at our guest, "There is the door!!"

Then Uncle chuckled, stood and shrugged, but visited no more.

The turkey, mashed potatoes and the freshly buttered corn,

Were tasteless now, relationships were ripped and left us torn.

Oh, those words were spilled forth, you know, a tit-for-tat...

And I just do not understand,

it should not be like that.

One year I planned with diligence, and truly, months before,

I'd grown my lovely sunflowers and zinnias galore,

                                         I purchased some large pumpkins,

                                                on sale at market store.

On our dinner table, I'd set a lovely cloth,

And down the center, pumpkins, filled with flowers,

                                                       Peace-plan troth

Two young ladies sat at corners: opposite complete:

                                      We all prayed, gave thanksgiving,

Passed the plates, began to eat....

When one of the young ladies raised her voice for all to hear,

And peaked at her opponent, hoping she had gained her ear.

She'd heard her. Oh. The tension I recall with apprehension.

I hate to stew, as I preview the gatherings in sight,

While planning out a menu full of Thanksgiving delight.

Feeling indigestion, though the meal's a week away,

I so want to relish thankfulness on the upcoming day!

I'd rather dish up peace in lieu 'a piece of homemade pie,

I'm feeling stressed, albeit blessed, I shake my head and sigh.

I set out the fall knickknacks, and grandma's old saltshakers

I hear her voice in whispers... 'Blessed are the peacemakers!'

I know it's always been thus, now I must find a way,

Respect, and love I pray prevail,

                                             This next Thanksgiving Day.

Pursuing the Beatitudes, Christ's words to change my scope,

Feasting on the Bread of Life, I face next week with hope.

Your poem has raised the antlers of a tough question: Is Thanksgiving a religious holiday or not? ... And if it is, what are people doing talking politics and other secular matters? P.S. This nation needs so badly to get 'back to basics.' And by that, I do not mean the NFL or the NBA. ~ Two-cent Philosopher

I agree, we need to get back to basics, sigh, just enjoy the food, no arguments, no ulcers. As far as a religious Holiday, I think some may adhere to a certain amount of a religion, of whatever their denomination or faith. Some giving thanks to God, as most of my family does for our many blessings, while others are simply thankful for their families, jobs, this nation, or just getting together for a feast and companionship. My large family is mostly calm, there is a bit of a stubborn streak present in one or two at times. Turning the other cheek is a good trait, but tensions mount and can be uncomfortable. Scares me. I wonder whether to host a crowd or simply meet on a smaller personal setting. I love them all so much, but sometimes separating into smaller groups on separate days works out, we have done this in the past. Last year I wasn't going to host, but did at the last minute, maybe I got the message across with that, actually, there was no negativity last year. :)

Wishing you the best this Thanksgiving. I love the part about hearing your grandmas voice as you set out the shakers. This is neither here not there, I only mention it, because I just read it this morning, the part in the adventures of huckleberry finn, where there's a feud between two families...seem senseless.

Yes, my grandma, my angel :) She raised eight kids, hosted a bunch of our family, and boy, she honestly could keep peace. She was a strong lady. I too raised eight kids, bio and adopted. Everybody has a right to their opinions, but surely, it is sweet when only positive communication and love + respect are adhered to during family get togethers. I hope this will be a peaceful event. Last year was ok, I need to embrace that. I guess I suffer some ptsd for a few other occasions. I think maybe my hubby should set up the old camcorder and we can play it all back on our old VHS tapes, we're old, so we can do that lol :D Seems like a plan anyway. Maybe if the family dinner celebration is recording for tradition and posterity's sake, it will present for pleasant behavior :) Just thought of that, my husband just said, "Sounds good to me!" :)

Yes, I am hoping for all positive communication and love this Thanksgiving. Honestly, I was not planning to host last year, but my kids begged me, so I did, and it was a peaceful event. My PTSD of other occasions has me jittery, but, maybe this year will be ok. I pray it is! Thank you for visiting, and may your holidays be filled with joy and peace :)

Even if the same side, none of that talk. It is not palatable at the Thanksgiving table. Who am I for but God Almighty! Such a beautiful table should be admired by all. Eat, drink and be merry, thankful in every breath God gives us. God bless and Happy early Thanksgiving! Higs

I so agree Kim, and that really does go to all divisive topics besides politics, there are a myriad of topics that should be avoided for the sake of peace and happiness. Thank you so much for your sweet visit and comment, I really appreciate so much <3 I pray you and your family are very blessed during the Holiday season :) Hugs right back to you my friend <3

Your "Thanksgiving Dinner Parties" is a powerful write. Great Picture Here... I tell everyone "No Politics Will Be Talked About." It is a day to be Thankful and to Enjoy. If it starts to go off track, I say it is Thanksgiving Day. Save that talk for tomorrow But Not Here. Prayer before eating helps. Beatitudes is a great one to read. Some families make everyone sign a paper about the rules for the holiday. Today have a Blessed day and Blessed Thanksgiving Day.............

Thank you Paula, I have asked that there is no divisive topics discussed, but there have been a few occasions where gathering all together for dinner has left a bitter taste in ones mouth. I want happy memories formed, not traumatic! Anyway, I thought this was a timely write as others have face similar tensions with gatherings. I hope you have a very blessed holiday season Paula, thank you for your visit and comment <3

BJ, Really fantastic poem that successfully conveys a relatable and emotionally charged message about family gatherings during the holidays. You intertwine personal anecdotes with a broader commentary on the tensions that can arise at these events, which resonates with me. Best wishes for the contest

Thank you Sotto, I have read up on any ideas to divert clashes that are online, and found the topic of tensions between family members gathered for holiday events is not a rare problem. I am looking for solutions as ever to avoid any drama, I know it isn't wide spread in my family, but we have faced some dramatic clashes on several occasions. Most of my family has been able to handle it somewhat well, ignoring the comments best that can be expected. I thought this was a timely topic to write about as I seek solutions besides having multiple Thanksgiving dinners over the week-end, which honestly, has worked well in the past. Hosting intimate smaller groups, which is a temptation for me even as I type. I didn't enter this in a contest, but maybe I will :)

We've not had that problem at a family gathering but I remember a time when something else came up that I had no anticipated but it all worked out. Thanks for sharing this one with us. It had good flow for the most part, rhyming very nice. I liked the story. I hope your Thanksgiving Day is awesome. Sara K

Thanksgiving is a time of peaceful camaraderie. It shouldn't be one of bickering or animosities. I am sad that you have still unhappy memories of the tension built around a thanks giving table. Hope this time all will go smooth. All the Best.

Thank you Anaya, and lol, the blue-eyed Jesus took me aback, Somehow, I just don't picture Jesus looking like the actor portraying the part, kind of think He has darker hair, eyes and skin :) but still, the words ...clinging to them ;) <3 :D !!!

There should be no politics or controversies during a Thanksgiving feast. The food smells delicious.
