Tethers
summer nights,
slipping into autumn's arms,
tethered to a reluctant lover,
cooling over nightside,
helpless in the arms of a solar girdled year,
and as I sit in moonlit kingdoms,
absent from a day filled with clang and clamor,
to a hushed and dimmer light,
still, I listen to nightbirds calling out,
echoed through shadows and shedding branches,
and nod to sullen truth,
we all have tethers,
like or not,
to one or other’s stake,
and bound to orbit,
kin to fair earth’s fate,
we travel,
round
and
round.
