Teenage Anxiety
With late night snacks her stomach is assuaged,
in preparation for a midnight rest,
that ends abruptly with a loud alarm
about six hours later. She wakes stressed.
Her teenage body begs for added sleep,
but she must quickly bathe and fix her hair,
and then eat toast with caffeinated drink.
She starts her day without a pause for prayer.
A hidden stupor lurks beneath a veil
of stimulating gossip on the bus,
that keeps her going while she texts and tweets.
Her time is spent on things superfluous.
She wonders why she has depressing thoughts
that signify a life of misery.
To compensate and cope with how she feels,
she takes pills daily for anxiety.
