Notes About The Poem

"The modern miracle
 isn't the star
nor bread
that turned to wine
but the hunter and the queen
upon one rug
recline —"

- Poet

Sweet Yo-Gurt

yogi comes first
my old companion burr-backed hearth-warmed
his peat-dark spring fur shedding summer’s presence
he lies on the fireplace rug squirrel-dream naps
muzzle silvered as a frost-split hickory post
a soft whine mute devotion
shadowing me keeping a keen watch
honest kind sportive soul
glued to my side even in sickness
another briar-choked ridge
to crest
hunter and chocolate lab

and then gurty
sovereign aloof moon-milk calico-born riddle
velvet paws and stealthy grace
a small Athenian goddess of the numinous
who appears vanishes wistful-eyed
moon fragment star-salt morning breeze
she prowls each rooms edge dust-mice
soft-footed serene indifferent
granting affection, rationing light
withheld offered only the queen knows
a small sheathed killer
making the world right
by choosing not to strike

between them household diplomacy
two philosophies sharing sunbeams
a duet of difference
two cultures thickening smoothing
yogi with his fawning tail-drunk joy
gurty with her vigilance her whisker-quiver
reading each moment for oneness
he presses close
she circles observing rubbing
a synthesis of presence
unconditional

i have seen her groom herself
in the soft ritual of sandy-tongue washing
and him pause trustful patient
her calm steadying him
i have watched them soften
the sandpaper-and-silk
collision
become friends family belonging
where the good life abides

night settles
they lie in parallel lives at my feet
yogi breathing his gentle snore
gurty a moon fragment curled in thought
and i smile loosen breathe
mercy can curl or bound
love a dog’s warm flank-heat
a cats purring sovereign gaze
and the small miracle
of both choosing the same rug
in the same
deepening hour

sweet yo-gurt

Daniel, my friend, this is a precious write. Your love and joy for your fur babies is evident. Perhaps their closeness says a lot about your family too…you must show tenderness and attention, and love each for who they are. The wording is delightful. A fave for me!

Dear Kim, my friend, thank you for this tender and generous reading. You always notice the heart beneath the lines, and it means a great deal that you felt the love and gentleness in these two. Their closeness really has shaped our home, and I’m grateful you sensed that. Your words blessed me today. Blessings, Daniel

One cannot help but admire how two different creatures can live in harmony. Love does not need to look the same to be meaningful. Brilliant poem as usual.

Hello Victor, thank you for this thoughtful reflection. You’re right, love doesn’t need to look the same to be real or meaningful. These two have taught me more about quiet harmony than I ever expected. I appreciate your steady encouragement, always.

It is so sweet to see these two- pronounced enemies by birth, but here, intimate buddies curling together and sleeping on one rug. How ingeniously you have given the title- Yo-Gurt! For your gurty, I like your coinage- 'sheathed killer'. Though your pets are a duet of difference, how much of harmony exists between the two..... what 'synthesis... what unconditional love'! How you enjoy your dog's warm flank heat and your cat's purring - two parallel lives at your feet. Dear Daniel, your poems are so amazing. This is simple and sweet, but some are too deep for me.

Dear Valsa, your eye for harmony always amazes me. You see the small mercies in these two the “duet of difference,” and it means so much that the poem touched you that way. Thank you for your kindness and for reading with such a generous heart. Blessings, Daniel

Aww this is a lovely poem and I love the contrast between the two different kinds of love... I really liked how the dog feels warm, loyal, and grounded, while the cat comes across as mysterious and almost otherworldly... What stood out most to me is how the poem finds harmony in their differences and it feels like a quiet reflection on how love doesn’t have to look the same to be meaningful. The ending, with both of them choosing the same space, feels comforting.. sending you blessings..

Hello Silent One, I’m grateful for how deeply you read this. You captured the whole spirit of the poem with that love doesn’t need to match to be real. Your reflections always bring a quiet wisdom, and I appreciate the blessings you sent. Blessings, Daniel

How cool that their names combined are yogurt. Did you name them that way intentionally? I love how you describe each one so eloquently. We have had dogs in the past that got along very well with our cats and it was so nice having them snuggled at the foot of our bed together. Once in a while a cat would lick and groom the dog's face! It's really something that dogs and cats can be friends yet humans can be reviled by their own kin due to political differences!

Dear Andrea, I love that you’ve seen this kind of friendship in your own home among dogs and cats, rewriting the old story. And yes, the name just happened naturally over time. Thank you for your thoughtful words and for sharing that memory it made me smile. Blessings, Daniel

My animal love heart responds to your poem with familiarity. I love the picture of the dog and cat reasting, I enjoy the mini-poem, and savor the longer poem which is bittersweet in the long list of both cats and dogs who have owned me. Thank you for this. A fav.

How I've lived with and dearly loved my furry friends. My mourning was as if having lost a child. Your lines are quite admirably dosed with the bond you share with them, and they with each other.

Dear Lin, it is amazing how God made dogs and cats our companions in so many different ways. Dogs are so loyal and show it constantly, they become part of our family. Cats are also very loyal, but they show it in completely different ways and expressions. Each cat I had always took to me like I am their best friend. I just love the comfort and companionship they bring. Blessings, Lin, Daniel
