Sunflowers and Cardinals
Sunflowers are Kansas’s answer to happiness in summer.
She has fields of them – smiling giants, sassy and pretty.
Their dark brown centers, peppered with giant seeds
Showing off shiny giant flowerets in sunshine’s color.
Beautiful in a verdant green background of hope.
Red cardinals are Kansas’s answer to happiness in winter.
They dip and dash at bird feeders, taking turns, no squawking.
Against the white snow, their color is fabulous!
I watch them flying in, and I smile, wishing my summer sunflowers
Could dip and dash like my gorgeous cardinals.
