Summertime

Summertime

August, Dog Days, natures speed bump
quieting the hum of impatience
laying humidity’s blanket
atop the weary landscape.

Leaves droop, listless vagrants
ambition wilting in the heat.
Flowers shield their eyes
begging for a merciful cloud.

Old Man River creeps
further from his banks,
withdrawing more each day.
Blue Heron watch.

Hot stones discourage basking turtles
mirages dance on asphalt lies
children shrink into the shadows
darkness beckoning night air.
