2. Beyond the silence of summer's end
Beyond the silence of summer's end,
the crunch of crackling leaves can be heard.
And the wind wails at trees that won't bend,
proclaiming such resistance absurd.
Summer's songbirds fledged and spread their wings,
so their songs have all but petered out.
No longer tethered, time cut their strings,
and gave them the strength to fly about.
The honking calls of migrating geese
fill the air as they fly south in flocks.
And when Fall's leaves fall, those honks increase,
unhindered by calendars and clocks.
Winter approaches, silent as snow
while tip-towing over Autumn's dead.
And yet, soon, Winter's cold winds will blow,
burying everything that hasn't fled.
