First, let me say that I thoroughly enjoy being a member of PoetrySoup. Since becoming a member over 13 months ago, my knowledge as a poet has increased and I have acquired many new poetry friends. A few months after I joined, a poet that I followed published a blog post on this site that said he had been a member here for many years and had never won Poem of the Day. He said that he was leaving PoetrySoup for another site; and sure enough, he left that day, all his poems disappearing from the site. I thought it was unfortunate that a person would leave for such a reason. After all, it's understandable if you are never awarded Poem of the Day, especially since PoetrySoup has over 30,000 member poets. This is what PoetrySoup states about the Poem of the Day:
"Read a fantastic new poem every day. The Poem of the Day is the highest rated poem from the previous day on PoetrySoup. We use a special formula to determine the poem. A poem cannot be selected more than once as poem of the day. Also, the poem must have been posted within the past day (or so)."
That statement further limits one's possibility of being awarded Poem of the Day. So never being awarded such an honor is certainly understandable (with over 30,000 member poets, highest rated poem from the previous day, special formula and must have been posted within the past day or so). What's interesting, however, is the number of poets who in the last year have repeated being awarded Poem of the Day. Also, most of the poems are excellent, but some leave you scratching your head as to how they ever could pass muster. Which leads me to ask this question: With the increased number of members, isn't it time for the undefined "special formula" to be upgraded?
All of this is above my pay grade. But I can write a poem when my muse strikes! Cheers!
