The Great Lakes Engineering Works built a new boat S. S. Edmund Fitzgerald, t'would soon be afloat The people that owned her needed a name President of the company was given that fame. One of the largest boats to sail on the Great Lakes Was a solidly built boat and had what it takes September twenty fourth nineteen fifty and eight Was her maiden voyage, laden with freight. The 'Mighty Fitz' was the nickname they gave her 'Titanic Of The Lakes', sadly that would come later For years she shipped freight from town to town Crossing the Great Lakes, left, right, up and down. The lakes weather worsened in the month of November Ferocious storm's that would pull ships asunder That fateful day 'The Fitz' took a route Sailing to Detroit from a port near Duluth. A hurricane force storm was heading their way Other ships took refuge in Whitefish bay Captain McSorleys last message, " we're holding our own" What happened thereafter isn't quite known. The storm battered the boat with thirty foot waves And sent all her crew to their watery graves November the tenth, nineteen seventy five The 'Mighty Fitz' sank, no one did survive. Lake Superior was where the tragedy occurred When the news got out, church bells could be heard The Reverend Ingalls twenty nine times he did toll For the crew of 'The Mighty Fitz' every lost soul. A memorial service is held once a year The bells are tolled, they pray, shed a tear Stories have been written, and a ballad too Dedicated to the men of 'The Mighty Fitz' crew. I never read this one til now Tom, to be honest I never even heard of the ship, on the wrong side of the pond over here, what a fantastic read and poem, what do these old school Captains be thinking, wasn't even a war situation, "we're holding our own" ships and storms are never a good recipe, only for disaster, congratulations top poem, cheers David

Thank you very much David, I hadn't either until Rhoda asked me to write a poem about it, those great lakes are vast and about this time of year experience horrendous hurricane force storms. You're right though ships and storms are a recipe for disaster. Im happy that you enjoyed it. Tom

Thank you Ann, neither had I until Rhoda asked me to write a poem about it, I only found out how vast those great lakes are when researching for the poem. One of them or maybe all feed the Niagara falls. Tom

Thank you very much Paul, I never knew that the great lakes had such ferocious storm's and had never heard of the tragedy until Rhoda mentioned it. I had never heard the song either and waited until I'd completed the poem before listening to Gordons tribute to the Mighty Fitz crew. Those lakes are vast, like mini oceans. Tom

Wonderful write! I read a book once on the forgotten souls lost on the lakes. Though not all remembered by name, we as human beings do not forget! Thank you for this historical write! Fave, Tom!

Thank you Cheryl, I enjoyed researching this one, but such a tragic story, I love to research something from history and try to create a poem from it. I listened to the song after I'd done the poem as I didn't want to be influenced by it. It's a great tribute ballad to those that lost their lives on that tragic day. Regards Tom

It's hard to believe this happened in relatively recent history. I liked this one a lot, and although many poets dislike rhyming poetry because it seems gimmicky or something, I think words have a way of sounding like what they mean, so if the tone and message are consistent, the words will naturally sound similar. Keep up the good work! Amy

Thanks Amy, I was not aware that there were so many different forms of poetry until I found this site. But rhyme is not always easy given the fact that there is a limited supply of rhyming words. I find it easy when doing funny ones as you can change the scene to fit what words are available. Historical ones I find much harder as you cannot alter the facts and really have to move sentences and words around to make them 'fit'. Maybe in time I'll try other formats but for the moment will carry on doing rhyme' What I like about this group is there is room for everybody whatever their taste in poetry is, and if you don't like rhyme or prose you just move on to what you do like. I see you too are a rhymer, RHYME ROCKS. Regards Tom.

Thank you Melissa, It was indeed a terrible tragedy. I learnt a lot whilst researching it. I wasn't aware of the hurricane force storms' that sometimes happen on the great lakes and also how vast they are. Regards Tom.

Dear Tom, A fine work proving that the traditional ballad form is adaptable to recent history. Beyond that, it was informative for the sad story will be new to many in Europe. It is surprising that another disaster, the sinking of the Empress of Ireland in the St. Laurence River just before the outbreak of the First World War to the loss of a thousand souls is virtually unknown in stark contrast to the fate. of The Titanic. Thank you for your comment on a comic ballad of mine.

Thank you Julian, I hadn't heard of the Empress of Ireland and a thousand souls lost is without doubt a terrible tragedy, but with the first world war looming I suppose it was overshadowed by what was happening in Europe.Any loss of life is tragic and should never be forgotten and it falls on writers, poets and singers to create work that keeps their memories alive. I wish you all the best for 2018.

A superb tribute, and for me a tragedy I had never heard of, albeit I have heard of the ocean like seas the Great lakes produce as the result of strong winds. Thanks for the enlightenment, best forever wishes, Mick! PS: Thanks for the follow! :-)

Rhoda, I'm glad you like it, it was certainly a terrible tragedy for those that lost their lives and their families. I gained a lot of knowledge researching it ,I was surprised how vast those lakes are and the terrible storms in wintertime. But I bet they are awesome in summertime. I haven't forgotten the other, might take a bit longer with Christmas looming. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Regards Tom
