Spring Soliloquy
Today I spied the first shoots
breaking through the earth
Lily of the Valley
the flower of my birth month of May
though there is still a chill in the air
winter clinging on by its frigid fingertips
for a few more weeks
I melt into my mattress listening to Led Zeppelin
Tangerine
though it’s not often played on the radio
for some reason I fail to understand
as it’s one of my favorites
It seems the best of everything comes from Britain
but I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that
I’ve always believed I was born in the wrong place
The lyrics lead me to ponder the passage of time
transitions
the cycle of the seasons
the number of each I’ve been blessed to see
There are fewer ahead now than behind
an even number at best
When I was younger I eagerly awaited this time of year
as all awakens and unfurls in shades of green
tulip trees bedecked in pink petals
seeds in the garden sprouting as they spread their roots
flowers bursting into bloom like fireworks
the perfume of purple lilac wafting through my window
as I write another poem or play
you will never read
