Spring
I am spring
Winter is my precursor
And summer my predecessor
Just when you think
Winter is insurmountable
I sprout, spring forth with gusto
Ravaging your cranium with rose,
Dazzling your eyes
With lilies, silver and red maples
I saturate your log holes
With early morning and late afternoon songs
From pine, hooded warbler and vesper sparrow
I evoke fresh rain from the sky,
Misty mornings and warm weather
I release plants from winter's brutal hold,
Vacate deep snow, ice sheets and gray skies
I bequeath your environment with
Beautiful butterflies, lady bugs
And just as your smiles are getting wider,
I dissipate salubriously
Leaving you with harsh realities of summer
I am spring
