Spawning In Spring

In spring, salmon spawn in rivers, swimming upstream.
The male salmon (Cock), battle for the female,(Hen) of desire.
While the Cocks are fighting, the young silver males, (Jack), sneak into the female nest, taking his pick.

                                          Spawning in Spring

In spring virile Cocks battle to win,
The heart of a Hen, waiting for him
                                            But to his surprise
                                            A Jack in disguise
Raided her nest; went off fin in fin.

Hi Indiana, so glad you stopped by with your encouraging comments. There are so many poets enrolled in Poetry Soup it is hard to come across every one~ I saw your poem and was inspired to open it because I was intrigued by your name: 'Indiana'...is that a pen name or given name? Take Care~Paulette

ha. I did not read your prelude and I was thinking cock was a rooster, so I was surprised to see the ending (and then I read the top part) hahaha

LOL! I was surprised too when I researched the technical name for male and female salmon~interesting to see that hens and cocks can apply to more than one species. :)Paulette

Charming...I love it! A chuckle and a smile. Oh, great information! That settles it! I will become a vegetarian, having now learned that salmons are a lot like people:)
