Sounds of Three Visitors To My Garden

Early morning, the trill with a buzz, is weighted toward the beak, tail twitching, side to side, underside barred: my friendly wren. The click in the heavy heat of summer the bright flame on winter day or hidden in shade the silent rustle, the graying double, steady chew, chew, chew, encouraging tweets: my pair of nesting cardinals. Nightfall, the flump, flump of wings plop down, or rise up to say who, who: mourning dove's lament songs by which to sleep and dream.

the wren, the cardinal and the dove. What a beautiful description for birds that beautify your garden with their sounds.

What you attempt successfully here is deceptively difficult- capturing the essence of a moment of observation. Love the phrase "my friendly wren".

Dear Sheri, The sound of birds is usually so comforting and it makes a wonderful backdrop for dreams. Love the way you describe your nesting cardinals and the dove's "lament." I've been hearing the "who who" as well and thought it might be a hiding owl. Probably a dove though. Now about that pesky mockingbird that keeps me awake all night, changing from one bird's sound to the other... LOL Enjoyed your poem and thanks for my place in your contest. Love and blessings, Carolyn
