Sonnet 66 'Upon a Time Ago, I Hunted Love'
Upon a Time ago, I hunted Love,
And thought, if I could catch it, it would stay.
But fear's hard by upon the catching of –
Love's happiness the debt you have to pay.
And then I thought that flying on wax wings
Was how I might match flight with joking Love
A heart that’s happy ever and always sings
Will raise the flyer to the Sun above
But then, my Courage melted, and I saw
That in Love’s absence, my looks had grown old,
I had no crown, no diamond without flaw
But still, my Heart burned—flawless molten gold
Flowed down from Heav’n and warmed me to the core
And so, Love came, and I chased, never more.
