Sonnet 1

Since youth a sweet companion you have proved
And troubled paths we have together faced
Though for me in you tenderness did move
Not here but yonder my affections placed

In time not love but words they did go scant
For many months we did no longer speak
No hand of yours to hold nor ear to rant
Those troubled paths without you dark and bleak

With fleeting hope I called to speak again
Your answer my affection did awaken
Your fingers, holy, rest against my skin
The old bonds once between us now are shaken

For you my chaste restraint do surely test
And you, sweet love, in my heart truly rest
