Sometimes I Take Flight

Although some things might make me want to fight,
at times I have the instinct to take flight.
I noticed this at first when I was ten.
It happened that I had a boyfriend then.

He’d see me at the church and we would talk.
A few times home from school or church we’d walk.
I had a birthday coming up, and he
showed up so he could celebrate with me.

My family sang happy birthday, and
what happened next involved my little friend.
One crazy custom says that you can spank
the birthday girl; I’d rather walk a plank. . .

than let some boy get close to my behind
and spank me , not just once, but ten more times!
That little punk would not be spanking ME,
so when he went for it, I had to FLEE!

I ran upstairs with him in full pursuit.
He had the nerve to follow, dumb galoot!
I locked my door because no matter what -
I would not let that fellow spank my butt!

More stories I could give to illustrate
how fast I bolt when faced with things I hate.
The moral is - from me just keep away
if you lean more towards Fifty Shades of Grey!

I remember those old customs of spanking the birthday girl ! What kind of present was that?? Whoever first started that ritual should walk the plank for sure ! Cute story !!

Yes, always spanking for the number of years and one for good measure we were told. I delighted in spanking my brothers on their birthdays who never got any licks it seemed. Great humor in this delightful poem Andrea. 7

Your little friend must have had a roving eye alike many men, but, after all he was just a kid...wasn't he? Got a kick out of this one. LOve, daver

Highly humorous. These poems that have a connection to reality seem to make more of an impression; at the least they are super compelling in the hands of an expert story-teller such as yourself.

All the woman seem to be reading that - for better or worse. I found this poem to be charming. The poem I had in the new York Times was A Visit from my Housekeeper". I think you may have seen it. It is on poetrysoup. Peace & Love Matthew Anish

Did this really happen? I don't think Mom would have allowed a boy to follow you up the stairs and our doors didn't lock, not that I remember them doing. However this is a very delightful poem and it did make me laugh.

Yes, it really happened. Do you remember him? I think his name was Keith. Our door does not lock so I just put that into the poem for effect. I believe I put all my weight against the door or maybe he chased me around the bed. that part gets fuzzy. I just know he never did get to spank me. hahaha and I never talked to him after that!!
