Some Assembly Required
The house is quiet,
and the children are asleep.
They did not want to go,
but I made them.
Sugar cookies, candy canes,
it all makes for excitement.
The tree…,
it is the one from the box.
It is broken, and shedding still,
as it was so many years ago,
ever… since the first.
I put it up last night.
I had to spread things out,
As you are not here, and I am tired.
I saved some money,
traded in some books,
and worked a little harder.
There will be gifts.
A bike, A doll, A train, A car.
No.
But there will be…
Socks, shoes,
a new shirt,
and “long enough” pants. (no high-waters)
The dress your daughter…wanted,
and the very, big bear,
in the toy shop window,
for our son.
Puzzles from the dollar store,
sweet punch from a packet.
No milk, but cereal is crunchy…
and surprisingly good.
I miss you.
We are okay.
You will be home,
next holiday…
