So, What Is Poetry

So, what is poetry?
A fond hobby? A dear pastime?
For some, inclined thusly, it is the
cliche' “My bread and butter” –
for others, to be sure, more a
journey toward spiritual discovery...
seeking enhanced enlightenment – desire
to make transparent man's multi
dimensional shell of physical enclosure –
personifying a mortal's deepest need to ascertain
his Divine source, by looking down the tree,
beyond the soil entrenched root
of man's bony, sentient spine...

So, what is poetry? It is a place
where the poet travels to both cleanse
and play – a candle when needed
for the night...and a salve to help
when doing bout
with a blistering day....

Thank you, Lindsay. So nice to know that this work connected...though poetry is an intimacy between the poet and his God -- it is also written with the hopes of it being worthy enough to share. Blessings my friend!

This is SO wonderful. The only part I cannot relate to is "bread and butter" I don't know anyone around here that gets paid for their poetry!! anyway, your metaphors are divine

"bread and butter" -- I hear ya. Quite a poetic imagination!!:) I hope there are at least a few Hallmark writers or song writers present. My wife pays me occasionally not to write...takes me out and buys me lunch.

'...a candle when needed for the night' both resonates with and haunts me simultaneously. Wow -- great line, Joe!

If no executive order against the production of dangerous matches, and the cost of candles stay within our reach, we will have this poetic option for awhile.

Poetry is so important! Oh how we’d miss it if it was gone. We need it to figure things out, to be creative, to reminisce, to mourn, to welcome and celebrate…and poets love to write about what poetry is… Nice, Joe!
