So, This Is What Loneliness Feels Like

It wanes a soft, subtle ache; unrelenting, whispering in my ear just loud enough to remind me. As I pace, I pick up a book and thumb through the pages with undue concern. I glance again at the unwavering, uncaring time. Outside the children still play, the cars still buzz by; for they don't know that I'm here, and lonely. Where are the arms that will hold me when I'm 60 years of age? The longing gaze that tells me I am still meant to be here. This is not the grand solitude that I've always longed for. This isn't what the end was supposed to be. Where do I belong for the rest of my life? Not here, not now. For if this is what loneliness feels like, I won't stay.

Hello Gayle, Your free verse here describes loneliness and the feeling of it very well. Yes, indeed, I do believe that all of us have been there in one way or another at different times in our lives. My perspective now at aged "68" (soon-to-be "69") has given me a front-row seat for sure. Regardless, all of us need to get beyond this "loneliness thing" and seek to live our lives to the fullest!! Cheers and Best Wishes, Gary

Hi Gayle, I've felt this way as well. Well written. Ya know, life has many obstacles and each time you come across one, it needs to be handled differently. I've been married twice and divorced twice. (lol) But as I realized after time, life does go on. Now I am happily involved and things are looking bright. Keep the faith dear. All the best Charlie

Don't give up! Loss is a terrible thing, I know this might sound crazy, but get out and about, dress up, go to a concert, it eases time and pain....( it helped me when I went through a nervous breakdown...) So sorry you are suffering...:-)
