So, What Should We Be? ( Sondheim On Sondheim.)

Sung to Send In The Clowns From A Little Night's Music. So, what should we say, right here, today? Feelings that two people had on one summers' day, drifting away... So, what should we do, about me and you? Recall we opened our hearts and admired the view. Fading and frayed.. drifting away.. Once we were young, our passion was true. I thought of no one or nothing unless it was you. Crossing the rugged terrain that I found in my way. Soon the refrain- "Then came today..." So, where do we go? Now that we know all of the moments we shared, was that all for show? I know I cared. Yes, that much is true. So, what about you?.. So, take it from here, should we shed a tear? For every grief that I gave, I'll buy you a beer. Yet, time is a thief, who steals every year, then, leaving us here. So, what should we be, if not you and me? Dampering vibrant flames to a lukewarm degree. But, what about we? Please..bring back the we. God..please say that..to me..

Gerard, last night I watched a documentary on Joan Baez..Lord only knows for me, the part where her and Bob Dylan split up, was a walnut in the throat, and I wanted to write a poem about it..usually I will jump right on the pen and slip, yet this time, something made me hesitate...and then, for some crystal reason, I found myself reading this beautiful lyric of yours..my thoughts of a reunion of their hearts, yep, fleeting...until I read this poetry ! It gave me hope, lost love could have hope!GB

After reading this, I went to youtube and played the Judy Collins version of "Send in the Clowns" as I sang your lyrics to the melody. Not only do they fit perfectly, but I think you have outdone Sondheim. Amazing, Gerard. You have so much soul in your writing. Surely this will be a winner. Love, Carolyn
