Single Sonnet

It seems the world consists of two by two,
And outcast ones are freakish by compare;
I used to be a half of two with you,
But now it’s only me, as you’re not there.
The sun appears to hide in clouds above,
My head replaying times with you around;
I see you walking with your newest love
And shuffle past, my eyes upon the ground.
I tried to keep your love but you moved on;
Attempts to reconcile have fallen flat;
All hope is lost, I know, and you are gone;
I lost, my rival won, and that is that.
Although our love has surely met its end,
I hope I will not lose you as a friend.

This one is imbued with both sadness and hope and is so finely crafted. Losing a love is hard enough, but to continue seeing them, especially with another is salt in the wound. Well done ~ John

Jack, this one is really going to resonate with those teenagers that read the book. There's nothing like that first crush and the douleur douce that often accompanies unreciprocated feelings. That's what inspired my first poems. Congratulations!

wow, jack, I see you made the winners list to be in that book of poems Ms. Ruff is doing. My sonnet is right behind yours. Cool! I can't believe I missed this work of yours. Is this the one you had told me about. I never did find it when I came to look for it. BIG congrats to you.

Excellent sonnet, Jack. It has both depth of feeling and correct form; a combination that can only be achieved by a good poet.

Even though this is really sad, Jack., Rest assured that hope is not lost. No one knows the future, my friend. Another winner in my book, still, my very best in the contest! xxAnnalise
