Silent Song

Silently, in golden notes,
     the sunlight sings;
Leaves of poplars catch the notes
     and give them wings.

Song of wind comes sweeping through
     with gentle might,
Shaking laughter into you
     of tone by sight.

Sun-notes on the waving grass,
     now they sing, too;
Where your footsteps lightly pass
     song clings to you.

Gentle might of life to me,
     my mind's bright song,
All the tongues of day's new spring
     for you are strong.

Up the hill you step and climb,
     into the sky;
Song of hair flows out behind,
     your forehead high.

Now atop the singing crest
     you stop to smile,
Seeing eyes that held you best
     this glad-sung while.

In my arms the song of day
     does rush and swell,
Silent song of lips that say---
     what song can't tell.
