The eastern whip-poor-will is a medium-sized nightjar from North America. The whip-poor-will is commonly heard within its range, but less often seen because of its camouflage. It is named onomatopoeically after its song.Image result for pictures of whippoorwill
eerie silence then whip-poor-will calls with gusto.... crack of a cool dawn

Anitha, I once could hear them inside my bedroom but now we have double paned windows and lots of insulation and all the windows and doors closed. It was much nicer falling asleep to the sound of whip-poor-wills and being awaken by them than an alaram clock. Yes, it was a pleasant dawn when I have a few minutes to myself before everyone arises. I used to love listening to the call of the bob white or the whip-poor-will in the early evening when I was a child. Nice. God Bless, JB

Judy, We don't have the quail here much anymore. I think the area's habitat has changed. There was a pair here for a couple of years then we did not see them again. We also have had an increase in the number of bobcats and they might be eating the eggs or the baby birds before they mature. Thanks for dropping by. Sara

Carolyn, Their call is reassuring since we have been hearing them for 56 years. I have no idea where they are in the woods but they are close enough that we hear them in their nesting season. Sara

I like the well-crafted Haiku; it's beautiful how three short lines can carry so much significance, particularly with regards to imagery and symbolism. Have a wonderful day, Sara
