Notes About The Poem

Sign of the Times

So many marriages now end in divorce
Innocent children are hurting of course
Gone are the happier days in their life
Now their parents aren’t husband and wife

One weekend a month the kids spend with their dad
Fighting between their parents often makes them so sad

There are now more couples who do not get wed
Happy to live together, so they stay single instead
Entering into cohabitation nowadays is widespread

Times are changing; commitment is a thing of the past
I see many love affairs; sadly I know they will not last
Many rush into relationships, why do they take it so fast
Easy to walk away when the rush of love has passed
‘Sanctity of marriage’, its meaning has been trashed

Sign of the times contest

Belated congrats on an awesome acrostic write Jan; you nailed the sign of the times theme with this take on divorce which is unfortunately so true about couples today! (And how the children get tossed back and forth!)~Che :)

An interesting take on the challenge, Jan. Less gloom and doom on a planetary level and more on the effect on children. Well done.

Hi Jan, I agree with of your poem. However, if couples stay married for the "wrong" reasons that's not right either. Because at the end of the day kids are smart and they know a "sham" when they see one. It looks like a winner to me. I wish you the best of luck in the contest:-) Alexis

Here! Here! You are spot on about the sadness of these times, Jan. It's so sad for the children when the parents are not together. I always ask them "what is the best thing that can happen?" Invariably, they say "Less arguing, less fighting, and maybe I'll get more toys out of the deal." Good luck in the contest. This is a really great acoustic.

Jan, great thoughts and expression on such a hurtful subject. I see that I will have stiff competition in the Sign of the Times contest. Warren:)

I do not see that "commitment is a thing of the past". Not getting married does not necessarily mean a lack of commitment. I know many couples who stayed together, in health and sickness, for decades in a loving, UNmarried, relationship. I don't think the good old days were so good, when women did not have a choice but remain in abusive marriages. Not sure that was great for the kids either.

I agree with you to some degree Agnes I've had friends in long term relationships and never got married and others married and divorced very quickly - we met a lad this week he had 4 children by 4 different women to me that is a definite lack of commitment:-( hugs Jan xx

I like the approach you took to this topic, Jan, and I suspect John will too. When one rushes into "love," the emotion can fade quickly. Very sad how this affects children. Hugs, carolyn

Working in schools I saw the emotional impact it had on the children and it often resulted in negative behaviour of course many divorces are amicable and the parents 'get on' for the sake of the children:-) hugs jan xx
