Shunned After Serving - a Veteran's Story

I did my time I paid my dues To come "home" To be with you ... I opened my heart I was vulnerable to belong I thought we were friends But it didn't take long... For you to step on my spirit Painting pictures of lies But you told me to go Now I'm mad, I won't cry. You shunned me away I asked for forgiveness And I'm saddened to say But you won't kill my spirit! Sometimes I think about it How you stepped on my heart Then told me to walk But I can see through the dark. How could people be so cruel And twist every truth There's video to show There's evidence, there's proof! I may not be welcomed But I'll tell you this much You can shun me today But it won't kill this veteran's heart. One day you'll see This never had to be You can throw me away But I'll hold the key...not for you... but for me.

Hello Kelly , I agree with you that the vetrens should be respected. This upsets me to vets fight a war come back home to family and begin a new. Some people do not think. Your welcome Kelly. Hugs Darlene.

Thank you Darlene. This was actually about a veteran organization I belong-"ed" to. Just because we are veterans doesn't mean everyone is treated kindly and with respect -- I in particular was shunned...Thank you for your thoughtful words tho. ~Kelly

Wishing you all the best. Veterans are the reason the rest of us sleep safe at night. Keep your chin up and take care.

Thank you Craig. I had a bad experience at of places...the American Legion...even our own comrades can be cruel...It's not the best of my poems but it's good regardless to get it on paper...then to get a thoughtful set of eyes on my pain makes it so worth the while to write. Thank you for your thoughtful words.
