Shipmates
I remember as if it were yesterday
Liberty call. Time to go ashore
Shipmates off to drink and play
Bars and women, who could ask for more.
In the Texas bar on Saturday night
Trouble wasn't hard to find
Backs together left to right
To cover each other from behind.
We never thought it was against the law
As a bottle grazed my face
He charged toward us and I broke his jaw
I just loved this rocking' place.
A few more to go as another fell
These were the best of times
Did we win the fight. I couldn't tell
One of the locals rang my chimes.
Arms on each others shoulders, returning to ship
Laughing out loud, in spite of the pain
Hoping bruises would heal before the next trip
Our uniforms soaked in mud, blood and rain.
