Shiny Things
Our whole lifelong we hunger strong for shiny things,
the pain of glory, gain, and wealth’s monopoly.
We have to know we won the bow, the choicest ring,
tossing aside hungry pride, to live happily.
Young girls with curls and pearls know passion’s intense fire.
While purer hearts rot in the dark with little hope.
The lust for gold and precious jewels fuels all desire.
Heedlessly we choose not to lose our finer scope.
Through our gaining and attaining, we beat the match.
So great a weight and blessed fate it's up for theft,
like women prized if they're surmised as a good catch.
One winners part leaves some poor heart lone and bereft.
As time goes by these things might die or gleam less bright.
We ponder where's that wondrous flair seen at first sight.
