Shedding Thin Skin

Held unyielding in your narrow mind
is the ignorance which keeps you blind.
Building dams will only hold you back
from accepting that white is not black.
Like a slow moving, barricaded stream,
your thoughts clot like curdled cream.
Thin skin has need to slough rejection,
Your rigid stance in mirrored reflection.

Break open the dam across the estuary
that hinders your vision. It's necessary
to move in sync with malleable fluidity
instead of sputtering words of stupidity.
Shedding skin will allow you to breathe.
Release your potential from its sheathe.
Even a snake slithers out from its skin
to crawl from where it once had been.

Little is the chance you have to accept
new ideas if they are not circumspect
to the fault of having such a closed mind.
Throw off the veil that keeps you blind.
Don't become stagnant and decompose
by turning your back, continuing to oppose
any idea with which you just don't agree.
You'll drown in arrogance, acting so lordly.

Jenna, Your poem is excellently conceptualized and beautifully crafted. The snake imagery is exactly right for your message. In short, it's a sterling piece of work. I wish I had written it. Hugs, Paul

I am very well, John. Thanks. To be discouraged by those who find it amusing to spread negativity and ill will would be a weakness. I would never be discouraged by such people.

Hi, Jenna. Your poem nudged me to look up why snakes shed their skin. The answer surprised me: All reptiles shed their skin,... and even we humans do! For more, see Wikipedia or any other source on the subject... Thanks for the motivation, Jenna, and congrats on your skillfully written POTD! Here's to keeping an open mind! Light and Joy, Gershon

Thank you. It sounds awful to be compared to a reptile, but then some humans act a bit reptilian at times.

reading comments on a blog and your comment to Andrea it seems I've missed so much drama recently Jenna, many congrats of POTD:-) hugs Jan xx shame to read on a blog that some one seems to think limericks arent worthy of potd , they need to get a life - I better get back to writing my 'porn' :-( hugs jan xx

Jan, your limericks are always worthy of becoming the potd, and though some are bawdy, they're never porn. All you've missed is the same site clowns performing their routine. An encore worthy of a snore.

I keep a snake skin in my shed pinned on the rafter. So thin to be translucent and floats on the drafts like gossamer, pointing any direction the puffs want it to. This is the poem of the month if you ask me.

now is we can just get all the snakes to take a bipartisan stance that does not require changing skins.....Some very thought provoking metaphor in this one, will have to read and ponder again...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think poetry has enough room for people who write from the heart. I’m shunned for speaking my mind while others are praised for speaking theirs.

Thanks but don’t be sorry, Mark. Lists can be written by anyone, even by the hand of self-proclaimed poets. Some of those mentioned are good writers, but then we don’t all agree on what constitutes good poetry, or even what makes words a poem
