She Tries
When she hears him snore
she slips out of bed.
And tends to her cheeks
that he’d slapped bright red.
Locked in the bathroom,
she breaks down and cries.
For she can’t please him,
even though she tries.
He calls her a pig
because of her weight.
And then forces sex
when his needs won’t wait.
With a trembling hand,
she swabs her split lip.
And scrubs the stains from
her blood-spattered slip.
Pain is a part of
her daily abuse.
And she wants to leave,
but it’s just no use.
She’s petrified when
the beatings occur.
And yet, if she ran,
he swore he’d kill her.
Her entire body
is bruised, black and blue.
And she’s so frightened
of what he might do.
