Shadows of the Heart

SHADOWS OF THE HEART That sad enchanted Lady saw the world As shadows in a glass, a faint reflection But thence a magic tapestry unfurled Showed disconnected lives in rich confection Today’s magicians wise in ways newfound View shades that are on magic screens displayed Thus they divine its truths, outcomes profound That may determine life to one dismayed No tale of heart-break here to cause despair Nor elegy by Tennyson related From these faint images emerge a fair And fresh healing conception innovated These shadows of the heart tell not of gloom But restoration, hope for life’s resume

Lady Shalott's mirror could not tell her of the depth, vastness, intricacies, mysteries... of the world around her. And the human heart is so much more than those smudges on an angiogram. Thank you for sharing this piece with us. Many blessings :)

I read your wonderful sonnet, Geoffrey, at first, as describing a possible conflict of sorts between life's science and art in much as the same way I took the theme from The Lady of Shalott to be.. (I actually went away and read it on account of your poem) and yet stepping back it appears that from the science in this instance (the angiogram) came your great, positive, intelligent write. :) I also likened the doctors and technology to Camelot's Merlin but then again my imagination runs riot sometimes. Cheers - Gary

Gary, I am very grateful for your detailed analysis and appreciation of my sonnet. Your understanding of my intentions is correct, and enhanced by the reference to Merlin (although he was not mentioned by Tennyson). Thank you, Gary.

Dear Geoffrey, I am impressed that while you were anxiously awaiting what the test results would reveal, you composed this powerful and inspiring sonnet. Blessings, Paulette
