Shadows Cast By Sun

Friends come and go, but some have passed me by
as swiftly as the sun that lights my days.
They wave goodbye; I give a little sigh.
It seems I barely had them in my gaze.

Sweet friends I knew from youth. Where have you gone?
My bonds with some of you I felt were strong.
But journeys that we each embarked upon
divided us, and now I write this song.

Its lyrics tell the longings of my heart -
to see and be again with each dear friend
who knew me when and shared a special part
which cannot be retrieved nor has an end,
for memories are shadows cast by sun
which haunt me even when my days are done.

I commented on this one over 2.5 years ago, which serves as a reminder of how long you have been my poetry friend and mentor. Still love reading this and to see this in the top three makes me so happy for you! Congrats, my friend.

A sweet, nostalgic write. "... for memories are shadows cast by sun ~ which haunt me even when my days are done." Andrea, just this week I was thinking about my best friend whom I haven't seen now for well over 15 years because "journeys that we each embarked upon divided us..." Congratulations on your podium finish on Mile 11 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 12 has already started!

Change is sometimes sad but inevitable. Some of us seem to watch life from a distance as we see those we consider friends come and go. A touching write.

I wonder if you speak in normal life / With smooth pentameter, iambically? Seriously, your IP flows so melodiously and smoothly I can imagine you talking on the phone that way, haha! An awesome write regarding the friends that slip through the hourglass of life; I feel that pain. Hugs ~ John

Yes Andrea. I have felt this deep appreciation for earlier bonds of friendship that just vanished. It's just another example of the life cycle. Easy come, easy go.

I've been to a couple of School Reunions, but not for a few years. But I do wonder what has happened to said friends I went to school with. Your poem brings back so many memories Andrea, James :)
