He is all that: a stranger to himself. a stranger, searching for a friend In him there is such sadness In his smiles his eyes never light That is how he is My stretching hand meets resistance plastered over his handsome face A smile is only outside, it can be taught it can be learned Real smiles only live inside in the heart of hearts the very soul People, so unkind, their words flowing like a river of judgment walking oblivious over his open for everyone to see inside They do not turn, they walk on His silent face reflects only hurt in his eyes, his smile remains Even if I cannot be with him anymore Even if I cannot do that Cannot bear to do that anymore I will be in his life, how could I leave him, we're dedicated Strangers and we love. *** April 19, 2017 Copyright © Darren White

And hopefully the other way around too. It's what I said tin response to Claudia. To reach beyond the sometimes coconut-hard outside of someone to be able to show true friendship and love exist.

It's about a general feeling of pain people can feel, and about how hard it is to reach out and really touch that person inside and show true friendship exists.

It is sad when two in love can't be together anymore...and love is still so strong.Strangers to the world but not to eachothers heart.

An amazing poem Darren:) 'smile' looks and sounds like such a happy, genuine word, yet some use its true purpose for ulterior motives to deceive others while many use it to deceive themselves. I love the authenticity of your heartfelt words, the lines ending with "were dedicated"., is deeply touching in it's meaning. That you penned this beautiful poem made my heart. 'smile', you are in perfect harmony with 'smile'...'he' is abundant in life's riches to have you Darren:) lynnxxx

Yes, exactly, and it's the dedication that counts, that shows the love in the end. Owww thank you for that compliment Lynn :)

Indeed Darren people smile on the surface when trying to hide their hollowness and pain. But the eyes - the windows of one's soul do not reflect their essence. One must look into peoples eyes deeper and you will see that a genuine smile makes theirs light up again. Beautifully done my friend.

Yes, and genuine interest, genuine friendship, and more, seeing someone's eyes light up, is one of the best things in life. Thank you :)

Your poetry is outstanding, creative and emotive. There is always a presence in your words that speaks to us who read, touching us, holding us, asking gently for us to understand and take something we find inside as a gift when we leave. In this case a smile, a genuine smile is what I will take as my gift. Beautifully done my friend.

Bring that smile with you, a warm presence in your heart, that is what it is meant for and it is all yours :)

There is a special sensitivity to this poem that makes it stand out as outstanding. I could relate to much of what you said. That's what good poetry does, it touches others (the reader) in unexpected ways. John

I am so very happy to see you back :) That alone is worth a smile! Thank you for understanding and liking my poem.

Yes, the smile can be taught but the eyes will always betray its half-heartedness. I love the fact you remain a constant in his life and are always willing to share part of his pain even though you are now strangers in love:) Amitiés

He has :) Thank you for loving that line, I think that is a truth, that what we show the outside world is hardly ever how we are inside.

A deeply moving write matey! I see your muse has returned to you swiftly once again! There is something inside this poem that really makes it sparkle! A deep truth perhaps?

Hi Budgie. Yes, it's a truth indeed... This is my first new poem after my surgery and sickness... I have to get used to it, and I am not sure yet about it, but we'll see what people think of it :)
