Schoolboy Can this be school? So dark and worn a backless seat, walls of scorn. Someone said, “We need a school. This cement relic here will do.” There sits a boy who’s come to learn. See his human interest yearn. He must write on several sheets. The desk tells its own tale beneath. By the naked light of day the schoolboy makes his troubled way among the dust and cobwebs here with momentary gunfire near. A busy mind and active arm quiet protection from alarm a child of turmoil and of woe in sponsored clothes by UNESCO. Where are the crayons, books and pens? When does he share a task with friends? Are there computers in his reach? Does the adult know how to teach? Will he have a nice warm meal? What keeps up his schoolboy zeal? Can he tell Mom what he knows? Can she see what school bestows? So, here’s to schoolboy, struggling hard against the overwhelming odds to break through to his excellence with swagger and self-confidence. In this place not fit to be he will work most diligently and in time get educated by some teacher, dedicated. 11/7/17 Photostory - Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Eve Roper

This is wonderful Janis. Our teachers are so undervalued. My daughter and son teach. I think it is one of the most honorable professions. Brava! Kudos on your high placement in the contest! Excellent! : )

Hi Janis, I am sad reading this heartfelt poem. School should be a place of warmth and safety for a child. Thank you for this moving piece so well crafted

I agree with Jo Daniel, you have protrayed a picture of a village school. I can see this as I read your poetry. Have a nice evening my friend.

This is a great poem exuding a great inspirational message, Janis. I LOVE this poem. Two of my sisters are teachers, so I can really relate to this poem. Being a product of public schools rigged to fail young and gifted inner city minds, I know the sacrifice it takes to succeed, despite the odds. Power to truth this momentous poem proclaims. Supernova bright poetry! An instant fave, sis. Love and hugs always.

Hi Janis, actually I live in a city and the school I work in is not so bad, it has good infrastructure, but as I said earlier, the schools in villages and a few in cities too are much like what you have mentioned in your realistic poem, I have been to such schools for teaching:)

Glad to hear that this is not the case but sorry to hear that there are such situations.

You have beautifully portrayed a village school scenario of India, Janis, I could relate to each word, being a teacher myself:)

Let me say Jo that it is better to be in a hovel and have students who want to learn than to be in a multi-million dollar building with ones that don't. If this place is your norm accept a retiree's salute to your dedication.
