Notes About The Poem

When I wrote each of these two Haikus over different seasons, they initially stood out to me as a standalone Haiku. However, after much contemplation, I believe they make a wonderful Haiku Sequence, for they emotionally complement each other.

Sapphire, Honey, and Rose

She is my sonnet:
Sapphire eyes and honey hair…
Smile within my storm-

A rare blue rose blooms…
Her psalm, a winter night’s flame,
My heart, warm, flutters.

A beautiful combination! Not many people write of a blue rose. I used to take white roses and spray them a touch of blue when I was younger.

Dear Karen, I always loved the idea of there being a true blue rose but there is none to be found in nature. When I was a child, there was a movie called "The Thief of Baghdad, where a blue rose was part of the plot. Dear Daniel, I am struck by the contrasting yet complimentary beauty (sunny/snowy, summer/winter, stormy/serene.. or a cherished love at different seasons of life) of these two haiku, which when strung together, provide an expression of a full and romantic appreciation for your "sonnet".
