Remember when you first learned how to read That youthful hunger, only books could feed How confidence was gained along with speed And knowledge was the essence of our greed Some nights while reading, how you'd beg and plead At bedtime, mom or dad would intercede When on occasion, tears would supercede A chapter's end, they'd lovingly concede Now looking back, those books helped us succeed These days still cracking books to fill that need Each book we read, another planted seed Another dream, imagination freed February 9 2017 by Daniel Turner

Oh I love this! So nostalgic and beautifully expressed. Every word is so true. I adore reading to children, being surrounded on the floor, their sticky fingers pushing closer as the story moves along, their eyes wide with wonder. And the questions they ask... children are so honest! You captured the magic of books wonderfully. This is one to be proud of :-) A fave, 7+ lynnxxx

Oh the nights as a child I got reprimanded by my parents when they came to bed and found me still reading! Unfortunately, neither of my children have that hunger to read, even though I was forever reading to them. TV is the biggest killer I'm sure.

I was lucky. All of my kids caught the bug early. I know for a fact they still read to fill that hunger:) Thank you, Elizabeth.

Hey Danny! As a former Reading teacher, I surely appreciate this poem. If only the kids nowdays would put down their electronic devices long enough to read a book! Anyway, love this poem and good luck in the contest. I entered it too. :)

When I was young I had four red audio cassette tapes. on each side was a story. I don't remember what the four stories were except for The Fox and the Hound was one. There was story books to go along with them. "you know it's time to turn the page when you hear the Chimes ring like this...RING" oh the memories.

Nice! You really did well with the monorhymes, and the topic is interesting. As a mother, it was a joy for me to read to my children, and even more so, teaching them how to read.

Thank you, Mrs Ilene. It is the "great escape" is it not:) I don't read as much as I used to. My eyes get tired too quickly but I'm not beyond buying a book on cd and letting someone else read it to me:)
