Raindrops, Ants, and Molecules On a Grain of Sand
It’s raining outside and I watch the raindrops slide down my window
And I catch myself wondering which one will reach the bottom first.
Then I realize they are all racing to the same conclusion;
Coming to an end, gone forever as a raindrop,
Joining millions of other raindrops also headed to their demise.
What’s the hurry?
I watch an ant crossing my kitchen table; he’s on a mission
Unaware that I am watching him as he explores his universe.
Then I wonder if someone is watching me as I explore my universe.
Is life an onion, each layer an observed universe? Are there more layers?
Are we being watched by something that is being watched, itself?
I walk along the beach kicking the sand with my toes and then I remember
That Carl Sagan once said there are more stars, planets, and moons
In the Universe than there are grains of sand on the earth.
I pick up a grain of sand and hold it in my hand, turning it over and over.
The earth!
Then it hits me.
I am just a molecule on a grain of sand lying on the beach.
Am I really that small?
I walk through Times Square surrounded by thousands.
Each molecule racing around on a grain of sand like ants on a mission.
Each one a raindrop sliding down the window of life, observed;
Racing to the same conclusion,
Followed by millions of other raindrops, ants, and molecules on a grain of sand.
What’s the hurry?
