why …
could the universe not be
created in such a way as to keep the
things we cherish
from perishing and rending our
souls to shards?
would it be so absurd to ask a loving
god for such favor?
that, a minor miracle, would be but a whim
for a being, omnipotent,
would it not?
such a request should be child’s play
compared to the deluge of
extraordinary miracles that surround
us each day -
a day star nourishing the earth
a sea that laps a million shores
wombs that bear wee wonders
and a foolish thing called ‘love’
that we all covet like madmen …
so how is it justified, thus?
why is time so short?
why do we ache so horribly for what we’ve
lost to timelessness?
is heaven that thirsty for tears??
are angels so lonely?
must the garden of graves
bloom so abundantly?
death has no favorites … tragedy, no idols
oblivion yawns before us all,
eager to feed …
and we are left with no excuses
but the one that leaves
us wordless
and echoes a truth that melts so
bitterly on the tongue -
it is mortality
that is the sole consideration
to ensure life remains
ever …
precious.
