Purgatory

PURGATORY As this old, rusting, worn out metal cup Is pushed into the fire and is purged with heat, Colors change with the dying phases of morbidity. At first red angry as it senses the approaching end Of its usual life of strength and rigidity of purpose. Presently orangely happy, easily bending and released From the twisting and burdensome past. Now yellowly cowardly at the unknown future As a flexible stretchable soft substance. At last, white and innocent it is born again, as liquid. A new form, new life, pure, reformed : Now this cup runneth over* . . . . . . . . . … . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . *based closely on Psalm 23 : 5 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
