Promised Vow

But this morning, as she turned away to leave, to keep a promise she had made, she glanced back at him, and flashed what to him was a reassuring, if teasingly conspiratorial, hint of a smile in her eyes. That, too, was a promise, and he secretly rejoiced, for it might still be that, though he did hesitate, in time, his love, or infatuation, as she had laughingly insisted, may not yet be too late, if only, for a while, it could wait.
