Pope's Proverb

"To err is human; to forgive, divine"
a proverb penned by Alexander Pope.
Without its trappings, this one single line
gives the Christian, his singular hope.

A stretch of Pope's thought from my own wit.
Would knowing full pardon from divinity
possibly inspire errant souls to quit
mankind's fallen state of depravity?

I do not claim to know the divine mind;
God's plan is sovereign. His proverbs we can trust,
"Vengeance is mine," is one that we find.
Two words describe God: forgiving, yet just.
