Ponder

"Clearly, animals know more than we think, and think a great deal more than we know." - Irene M. Pepperberg

I have often pondered if animals or our pets can tell time
Mine seem to know when my alarm clock is ready to chime
If I am not awake and out of bed by six AM in the morning
The meows and whimpers begin as if they are scorning

My pets are rigid and adhere to their feeding demands
If ignored, the bed will be where my cats will soon crash- land
Purring loudly as their furry faces and whiskers tickle mine
Soon it will turn into some tongue licks, little bites and whines

My dog then comes charging into the room with his ears flapping about
He’ll stand at the bed and pant as his smile soon turns into a pout
The same thing happens when it’s their time to eat at night
They become disruptive by scratching and jumping, oh what a sight

The dog seems to know when it’s later at night and his time to go out
And can sense when the time is close to eight PM, without a doubt
He gets a reward for taking his night meds and going out before bed
He knows when he comes in, he’ll get a biscuit or two snacks to be fed

I have pondered this for many years as animals are very smart
Is it their routine or does the time on the clock alert them to start
I wish they could answer this question and had the ability to talk
But I think if we could hear their words, we might be in shock

Interesting: I read all about Irene Pepperberg and her amazing work with and revelations about animals in Discover Magazine two or three years ago. Her discoveries shake the foundations' of man's conceptions --- misconceptions, really --- of the animal world.

For sure our pets have internal clocks just as we do. Once we got this new dog that was used to waking at 5 am because of its previous owner . Well it took a few days. But we finally got her on OUR clock hahaha. Congrats for your win

Tania, my little Ratcha (her breed) knows before me when bad weather is coming or if there is thunder around, but I attribute that to her hearing ability. She is very attuned to routine, but she seems very to know when I am going to take her out for a walk, etc. I do believe they understand more than we know. When my husband passed, she jumped into his lap and seemed to know instantly that he was no longer there, she is still missing him, and it has been a little over seven months. Sara K.

I'm certain you're correct. They all seem to have an internal clock that tells them it's time to eat! They could be sound asleep and when the hunger clock strikes its alarm, they come running in.

This is such a cute poem and I really do believe they know more than we think they do. They know about time that's for sure and another thing they know is when I am filling the tub for a bath they know if it's for them or me. They know if I'm getting ready for work and they know if I'm getting ready to take them out. Nicely done my friend. God Bless, JB

They're cleverer than we know Tania, you rose well to the challenge, this is a tricky one creating a poem with one word. Tom
