Polka Dots Stripes and Flowers
1967.
My twin and I were allowed to choose paints
and wallpapers for our joint room.
I insisted on stripes and polka dots.
My sister wanted old-fashioned flowers.
Our mother settled it.
One wall each and one plain wall.
In lavenders, purples and turquoise.
Setting a new trend in small town Iowa.
The next year empire waist dresses came out
With polka dotted bodices and striped skirts.
Flowers were on separate dresses, all the rage.
For those girls who still liked prissy flowers.
Not me.
