Playful
A young puppy came into my home today
Tiny and nervous, his siblings far away
It didn't take him long to come out from his shell
Just little scared when he first heard the door bell.
Sniffing an exploring he left little wee puddles
We laid on the sofa having snuggles and cuddles.
Placed next to his bed was a box of new toys
Balls, a tug rope an one that made squeaky noise.
At first he showed little interest in any of these
But liked to find places that was bit of a squeeze
Learning new surroundings, I would watch him explore
Running excitedly he'd crash into a door.
He chewed some plants, dug holes in the lawn
Had me up early; often at dawn
Playful, energetic, always wanting to play
We were both very tired at end of each day.
He yapped in the mirror at his own reflection
Then came small growls, his guarded protection
He just needed time to feel safe and to adjust
I felt honoured when he gave me his trust.
Everything to him was a new game to play
Lively and learning life rules to obey
My carpet became his latest new toy
Chewed an in tatters by my playful boy.
