I am majoring as a scientist in college and loved my physics class last semester. Since I don't really have any angst right not (being a nerd with a charmed life) I thought I'd pull from what I know and love, that is, science. I plan to do an entire set based off of the different sciences. Maybe children's poems about science too. I don't quite know yet.

I'm traveling north At a fraction of the speed of light In a linear progression Through the dimension of time A point mass A particle Going in a straight line The interesting stuff happens When your path hits mine A collision A decision To connect Or redirect Each path a new Direction Each direction a new Path It's all relative I'm the center of the universe All I see Is mapped from me It's all relative You're the center of the universe All you do Is mapped from you It's all relative We're the center if the universe All we need Is mapped from we There goes the clock Tick tock tick... tock... Slower and slower As I go faster and faster Traveling north At the speed of light A point mass A particle Hurtling towards A destination A collision An intersection A decision

Now, is this poem in relation to a Cartesian coordinate system or a polar coordinate system? Ha, just kidding... loved your physics write Heather. Especially the references to Einstein's thought experiments with time slowing down as velocity approaches the speed of light. Fun to read aloud, too! Hope you find some more science nerds on Poetry Soup. I recently wrote a sonnet to my High School math teacher and found a lot of Soup poets hated math in school (and still do!) Great job on this! ~ John

Haha! Typically I use Cartesian for physics. :) I wrote this while I was taking my first college physics course and I found the Einstein relativity to be absolutely fascinating! I also loved the idea that anything can be the center of the universe so long as we set it as the origin point on our coordinate system.

I like how you used the physics as a jumping off point for deeper metaphor about life, Heather. Physics is awesome and can be very poetic. What kind of physics class did you take? Agnes

Thank you! I took a calculus based Newtonian physics class. It was amazing because my professor liked to talk about all of the weird things that could happen in physics and didn't limit himself to the course aims. I found the class really inspiring.

I really enjoyed this poem. I visualized the process as I read. My son (the environmental engineer hates it when I talk physics). If only he knew how much I enjoyed this poem. Rock on nerd girl.
