Perfect Life
I was a famous poet in earlier years
excelled in school, had my choice of careers.
Always surrounded by the best of friends
no fears of being alone again.
The men would chase but
they never loved more than my pretty face.
You see I was so beautiful
slender and sleek.
Soft and seductive
I didn't need words to speak.
But I was so innocent
unlike my style...
the combination, a curse
bringing men from so many miles.
Through all my fortune and all my fame
I found a loving man and took his name.
The way he adored me, caring and protecting
always considerate, listening and respecting.
Starting a family seemed so right
we all pulled together when times were tight.
Loving so much we grew old together
watched the children build memories to treasure.
The perfect life, in retrospect,
or so it may seem.
But none of this was real,
Except in my dreams.
