Peace
What joy, such happiness
We laughed and cried last night on skype
I can come home I said, her face like the sun
I hugged the dog, she hugs the kids
To have such feelings is beyond compare
From the plane I walk, the German sun warm, my clothes stick
My heart pounds I reach down and stroke the concrete
Around me people it is a mirror, my people sit, kiss the ground
My rifle falls from my shoulder with a loud noise
But I don’t care, today I am home, it is over
Three figures race towards me laughing, crying, a repeat of our call
They come to my arms, we dance, tight, enveloped
Surrounded by my troops they all do the same
We smile at each other, common relief
No words, just emotion, love so strong I taste it
Wife in hand, daughter on arm, son carrying my pack we walk
One family member to collect, there she is, my friend my protector
She jumps from the cage and licks all a fond hello
We all laugh now, the family is complete
Driving home, it becomes real, shops, people, safety
In bed I lay, my love beside me, she examines my body, all of me
Touching wounds asking questions, I said nothing of these before
She is angry for my silence, but understands why
Finally, she accepts I am complete, we talk, we cry, we love
As I fall asleep I hear no sounds other than her breathing, the silence
Peace at last
