Patches

You are a good dog Patches,
'cept for brown patches of stain,
                                             Which you leave all over
                                                     the green grass,
                                            I wish you would restrain
You're such a smart dog, Patches,
You left my mind in awe,
When on the 6 ft block wall,
                                             Your careful pretty paws,
Lead you, as if on tight rope,
As if you were a cat,
                                           You could have fallen and
                                                   Broke your tail!
                                               Please don't do things
                                                         like that!
                                             You're such a sweet dog
                                                          Patches,
                                               Unless you rip up trash,
And tear up the new carpet
That cost us lots of cash.
You are a blessed dog, Patches,
But did you eat a yam?
                                                              No!
                                              When Holidays were nigh
                                                       you stole and
                                             Chewed the Christmas ham!
You are a dear dog Patches
                                                And truly, thinking back,
                                             You only chewed up diapers
Cuz' you liked them for a snack.

I will love her always. It was an amazing night, the night we found her there was a full moon, we were driving up and down a curving road with only one outlaying business on it, and there was a fire hydrant in front of it, she was taking a little potty break in front of it, I couldn't believe it. With a whole crazy empty desert all around here is this beautiful dog squatting in from of a fire hydrant! We pulled over, I opened the door to the big old Suburban, and called to her, terrified for her out in that region we had bobcats, mountain lions, just really wild besides cars speeding through occasionally. But she came to me, and the rest is history <3

I think patches thought she was a cat. You have a good poetic description for that dog. She was a beautiful dog but very sneaky and aloof. Thank you for memory of her.... I think. I'll try to focus on the good.

Lol, Anon, you knew her well! You always said she was a 'sweetheart', but I concentrated other aspects, lol, those qualities we were not too fond of. You're welcome for the memory...I think ;) focus on the good. She was the world's biggest lapdog, incredibly beautiful, loved her daddy, mama's lil' princess, the kid's best friend, super fun, played hide and go seek & the hot and cold game, learned every new trick we ever tried to teach her. There you have it. Focus on the good and laugh at her antics...in hindsight! I should not have bought ham for the family Christmas party anyway... the turkey was delicious and better for our health! Maybe, she was watching out for papa, we'll just pretend and give her that? Ohm gosh, the splash she made when she dropped it in her dog water and ran off, lol <3 Thank you for coming over to my site with your insight sweet hubby :)

Patches must have been a constant joy. Animals can be wonderful friends.. I enjoyed reading about your mischievous, adorable pet. Best wishes. :)

Well, constant, except for tearing up trash, carpet, stealing food while it was being prepared and you turned your back for half a second, and eating diapers but leaving the crumbs, yes, lol, besides all that, she was my sweet girl. I think honestly, the real problems with her behavior began when we adopted our babies. She had been our baby, so, I think she was acting out. She obviously put her paw down firmly and resolutely; she wanted attention one way or another! But I loved her so much, besides the drama, she really was a wonderful lil' girl <3

Whoa!! Patches had a messy and cheeky streak, but don't we love them anyway. My husband had a horse called, "Patches" but his full name was Blue's Magic Patches. I love the dog that we share our home with now, but my Chihuahuas were my love. I can't expect to find others just like them though. I like this work and thank you for sharing it with us. Sara K

Yes, she did, for certain, and I still miss her, I loved her and after all these years, I still think about her :) What a lovely name for a horse <3 No, they can never be replaced, others come, and live their precious lives and pass on, leaving an ache in their absence, but never replaced as that is impossible. They are all so individual and unique with their personalities, she was truly one of a kind, most dogs would never think to walk tight rope style on the top of a narrow block wall, thank goodness! Thank you for your visit, I love hearing from you <3

We are so lucky aren't we? They can be difficult at times but their love, sweetness and companionship outweigh difficulties. I absolutely love the name of your dog, how adorable!

She was! Lol, oh my goodness, she was! We had to keep a close eye on her because she was an escape artist too. Once we had a visitor who didn't realize we needed to hold her collar when the door was open, especially the front door. He opened the door to exit and she was out before he was! She was fast, and very social. She saw another dog going for a walk with his people and zipped across the street barely making it across as a car slammed on their brakes when she ran right in front of the car. She greeted the rottweiler on the leash with enthusiasm, but he nipped her on the nose, she zipped back across the street, heartbroken, she could not understand his aggression. Boy was she lucky that time. She kept us on our toes!

I have been blessed with the companionship of so many wonderful canine dears since I was two years old, I remember every one of them so fondly. Patches was a character, as pretty and sensitive and sweet as could be, but a very mischievous little girl too! Right now, we have a cat, he is such a dear, and a comfort to me. Our last dear sweet dog GJ passed away a little over a year ago, he was at least 14 or 15 years old, He was a rescue from the city pound, his last day before his life would have ended there, we loved him so much too. My heart still aches too much to get another dog, it always takes me awhile until I'm brave enough to become vulnerable and brave to bring home another fur baby as I grieve their losses in passing. I wish they lived longer. I trust though, when the time is right, I will know. I believe when the time comes, our new dog will come along. She came to us, it was so meant to be, she was a sweet, sweet girl, though, yeah, a bit of a naughty one :)

Thank you Sotto :) It is easy to laugh about some of her antics two and a half decades past the naughtiness of that little princess canine, but despite all the difficulties of cleaning up the trash, and all the rest, she was truly a beautiful, fun, smart little girl that has left her pawprint on my heart and memories forever :)

I did everything to keep her out of the trash, even bought a heavier trash bin that was more complicated to open, but she figured it out, that grossed me out so much, especially when she came for a kiss, sorry, gag reflex in motion on that one, lol! She was meant to be ours for sure, she was adorable, but naughty! :)

OH, my gosh, now many times during t 8th grade did I cry to a song called, "Patches". I haven't read yet, not ready to cry (I think song Parches was a poor, old man (will google.) OK, == I MADE IT W/O TEARS, the diapers kept me sober. A visiting dog once ate out of my cat's box, 'tootsy rolls" I guess. I know, too gross for some. I loved this sentimental visit and glimpse of you & Patches. WE LOVE OUR PETS, should get time off when we lose them, it hurts. A fine poem, many barks from me.

Ew, lol, tootsie rolls! :p! We too had a dog that did that after having stray cats leaving them in the yard as small tokens of delight for our most recent pet dog, that was so disgusting! My husband loves to eat candy Tootsie Rolls, his favorite candy, I will restrain myself from sharing your joke about the homemade kittycat variety! :D

I too use to cry to a song 'Patches', the one I listened to was about a girl from a poor neighborhood and the young man was forbidden to have a relationship with her as his family were of a higher financial class. I am listening to it now, it was a hit in 1962 by Dickie Lee, oh it still breaks my heart! Such a tragic song of teen love, reminds me of Romeo and Juliet, I'm tearing up a bit! I agree with you, our pets are so dear to us. She was such a smart and lovely dog, but very mischievous! My daughter taught her to play the hot and cold game, she was an amazingly smart dog. I was told by the vet she was part Aussie, and they are great at jumping high walls and very adventurous! I will try to post a picture of her with my poem when I find one :) She was so pretty <3

I found her one night years ago, way out of town where we lived in a neighborhood miles from the city. I found out she was owned by two men who were squatters at an abandoned house, they said they were truckers and not home much. I felt terrible leaving her with them as she crawled to them on her belly. I literally prayed that God would bring her back to me if she was abused, and as I prayed we were pulling into a gas station store in the area, and driving a different car than she'd been in. Before I finished that prayer she ran across the parking lot and was beside the passenger door, my side of the car! I went to the men and asked them if I could keep her, they said yes :) She looked like a coyote but with beautiful fur. What a beautiful little stinker she was. It was about twenty-five years ago, and she has long gone over the rainbow bridge, but boy, I loved that little girl, even though she was quite the handful!
